What is a Link wheel?
A Link Wheel is basically a circle of links back to your main site.
That was the easy explanation, let`s go a little deeper. We mentioned how important backlinks are to our search engine ranking (SERPs) for short. We have already established by gaining as many quality related backlinks as possible will better our chances of picking up free natural traffic.
By having these backlinks in the form of a wheel or circle will further the chances of picking up free traffic. What you will need to do is link one part of the circle to the next part of the circle and so on creating a full circle around your main money site.
To create this circle you use a mix of articles, blogs, Web 2.0 properties, bookmarks, RSS submissions, and paid article submissions.
We will focus on two of these to build our link Wheel
We have already seen how placing backlinks on article sites helps our (SERPs) and using paid article submission sites with a higher reputation even furthers the ranking from the free article sites, but what about web 2.0 sites.
Web 2.0 sites are free blogging sites where you can also place backlinks.
These are just some of the 2.0 sites available to use for your wheel. Mixing the free blogging site and the article sites optimiser’s your wheel to the full.
How to build a link Wheel
Step 1
Write a Squidoo lens (Page) about your website topic. Then put a link in your Squidoo lens back to your website.
Step 2
Write an article about your topic and submit it to any of the online article directories, as shown in the backlink section. Include a link back to your Squidoo lens in your article, and also a link back to your main site.
Step 3
Create another 2.0 free site say Wordpress.com about your topic and link it back to the article that you wrote in step 2. Also a backlink to your main site again. Can you see the pattern of what we are doing, creating links into each other, and then links back to your main site.
The more spokes you have in your wheel that link onto the next spoke the greater the chances you have of picking up links to your main site.
Step 4
This is important. Do not have links in one spoke of your wheel to more than one other spoke, what you are doing is creating a circle one link should lead to the next.
Each spoke in your wheel should have two (2) links only, one to the next spoke, and 1 back to your main site. When you want to close the wheel link your last spoke back to your first spoke.
Some marketers will tout this as a big secret but when you think about it logically it just falls down to common sense. The only thing you have to do is make the time and effort by opening accounts with these web 2.0 sites by building a simple web site then write and submit a few articles.
For all of our social networking sites like Twitter and LinkedIn, you can have these sites link to your other link wheel pages, and vice versa to include the maximum link diversity and give you the best natural links to your site.
When you have finished creating your Link Wheels we will need to ping the search engines to let Google know we have new sites for them to index. FeedPing.com is a pinging service that will ping about 250 different search engines, they will see your new sites and include them in their index then tell Google. The bigger your link wheel is the higher the chance of it being indexed, they will observe that each site is linking into each other in a form of a wheel.
Your Link Wheels are now complete and over a period of time they will start to generate free traffic to your main money site.
The old saying (You reap what you sow) is never truer in this case, and the more you sow the more you will reap. Ideally you should update your free 2.0 sites with a minimum of 100 new words, then write and submit new articles about every 2 weeks. This type of productive action will certainly reap grand rewards and before long you will have created a solid source of regular traffic to your main site and maybe a place on the first page of Google.
The difference between backlink`s on their own and a Link wheel is a bit like fishing in the sea. Imagine you are in a boat and you have 100 lines with hooks on, you are going to catch fish just like your backlinks will help pick up visitors to your main site. Now imagine instead of lines and hooks you have a great big net you can throw over the side. Your chances of catch large amounts of fish have suddenly increased massively. This is the same as a link wheel enabling you to catch large amount of traffic back to your main site.
Helpful hints
Some of the article site directories are a great resource for your link wheel, but most of them don`t allow you to include a keywords as your link, but rather just the URL for the targeted site, which is great because it helps with the link diversity.
We high-lighted the importance of selecting your domain name at the start of this guide, now this is equally as important if not more important when selecting names for the web 2.0 sites and article sites.
The name you choose should be the keywords you are targeting i.e., if you are selling auto parts your name for your free sites should be (autoparts.wordpress.com) or (autospares.wordpress.co) or (autoparts.squidoo.com) or any other keywords relating to auto parts then the name of the free site. The ultimate goal is to setup a destination, that is related to your targeted main money site and on each of these sites we setup ideally we`ll have more information relating to your main site.
